John Amadio 1884-1964

Born in Wellington, New Zealand, Amadio studied in Australia and played on a Radcliff model flute throughout his career. He played with the Marshall Hall Orchestra of Melbourne 1903-1912 and taught at the Melbourne University Conservatorium 1909-1920. He was also principal flute for the Italian Grand Opera tour of Australia and for the First Melbourne Opera Company in the 1940’s. In 1911 he toured with Melba.

He left Australia in 1920 to tour with Tetrazzini and began a career of concert performances, broadcasts and recordings. Returning to Australia in 1947 he played in the Melbourne and Tasmanian Symphonies. He played with dazzling technical facility and a slight vibrato.
